I also offer Intelligence Testing (IQ) in my practice, which provides a standardized measure of cognitive abilities. These typically include skills such as verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.
Standalone intelligence testing is often requested for the purpose of private school applications, gifted program admissions, or other gifted organizations and education programs (GATE programs, Mensa, or Davidson Young Scholars).
Testing sessions typically last 2 hours, and a follow up written report is provided within one week of testing. Activities consist of puzzles, questions, and various ‘brain games.’ The written report includes individual index and subtest scores, alongside behavioral observations.
When describing testing with children, it’s often helpful to frame the activities as ‘thinking puzzles,’ which help to see how their brain thinks and learns best. As a general guideline, it's best to keep it as low-pressure as possible, helping them focus on giving their best effort without worrying about the outcome.
It can be common for children to initially feel some mild nervousness at the beginning. As such, I prioritize helping them feel comfortable, whether it be through a quick game of mini-hoop basketball to warm up, exploring the different fidgets in my office, or taking a break mid-way through testing to eat a fruit snack together.
Both weekday and weekend availability, in San Rafael and San Anselmo office locations.
Standalone IQ testing only provides information about cognitive abilities, and does not assess the range of domains covered in a comprehensive evaluation (attention/executive functioning, learning and academic skills, memory, social and emotional abilities). As such, IQ testing alone cannot identify learning differences or twice-exceptionality (2e).
